Please Write and Let Your Voice Be Heard

By David Ernes and Richard D. Gainar, CEBS – Lake Management Committee

love-the-lake-logoIf you think elected officials pay little or no attention to your letters and phone calls, think again. A concise, thoughtful letter from their constituents has a significant influence on elected lawmakers. Your vote helps elect them — or not — and that fact alone carries a lot of weight. A staff worker may read and answer your letter because hundreds of letters are sometimes received. But, be assured that your point is communicated and will influence the lawmaker. If you fail to make your interests known, your thoughts will not be represented.

In a recent “In the News” article, it was mentioned that House Bill 490, which would help to reduce nutrients flowing into Lake Erie, failed to come to a vote. In a surprisingly rapid pace, the Ohio Senate has drafted SB1, which will address the same issues, without the pork that doomed the previous bill. Unfortunately, the new bill has the same issue that was pointed out in the last one – it applies to only a few watersheds which directly feed the western side of the state around Toledo. We need to suggest that the bill be modified to include all watersheds which feed Lake Erie, including ours. Therefore, the LMC asks that you help us and write to your state representatives and ask that they consider this change. A few suggestions for content are shown below.

  • The intent is to improve water quality in Lake Erie, but SB1 ignores most of the Ohio coastline. All watersheds which feed the lake can affect the overall Lake Erie water quality.
  • As a resident of Ohio’s largest private lake, we would also like to insure that the water quality is protected where we live. Our community is actively addressing fertilizers and cleaners that we control. We cannot affect the farming practices which have the greatest effect on our lake.
  • Although the blooms are currently worse on the western basin, that does not mean that, with time, the problem can extend to the rest of the lake, especially if nothing is done in the central or eastern watersheds.

It’s usually best to send letters to your state representatives for local issues such as improving water quality. Our Ohio District 99 House representative and Ohio District 32 Senate representatives are:

Salutation for Ohio House rep: Salutation for Ohio Senate rep:
The Honorable John Patterson
District 99

Columbus, OH 43215Dear Representative:
The Honorable Capri S. Cafaro
District 32
Senate Building
1 Capitol Square, Ground Floor
Columbus, OH 43215Dear Senator:

Your letter does not have to be long or eloquent. It also helps personalize your letter by providing some non-emotional detail and facts in your own words. If a certain bill is involved, cite the title or number (in this case, Senate Bill 1) whenever possible and explain how it affects you and others. Be sure to include your name and address. Keep it short and simple and include evidence to support your position. Close by requesting the action you want taken: a vote for or against a bill, or change in general policy. Don’t forget to thank them for taking time to read your letter.

Questions? Please email David at: ernesdl@yahoo.com or Rick at: rdgainar@yahoo.com. We believe your letters in support of keeping nutrients and sediment in the fields and not in our waterways will have a significant benefit for Lake Roaming Rock. If you agree with us, pick up a pen. For the price of a postage stamp, you can affect our future.

Lake Roaming Rock Fishing Club

by Ed Baitt – Fishing Club President

Did you know that the club will celebrate its 40th anniversary this October? It was founded in 1975. In the months to come, I will publish articles on how the club grew, its heartbreaks and happiness.

But at this time, we should all thank the nine men who started the club and to all of the Officers from 1975 to 2015. They were the backbone that’s seen its ups and downs. But we made it!

Back in 1976, Al Sbrocco stopped over my house and asked me to join the club and I am glad I did. Now I have been President for the last 3 ½ years and a member for the last 38 years. I met so many members in the club, now they are my friends. Today, the membership is 80+ strong.

So again, thank you! And most of all, thank you members who pay their Dues and for their support of the events. Your Officers for this year are, President Ed Baitt, Vice President Dave Emick, Secretary Dave Flaum, and Treasurer Walt Samson.

For the next five months, we will feature more articles about the History of the Fishing Club.

Thank you,
Ed Baitt

Association Meeting Highlights – Feb 2015

Association Meeting Highlights
by Richard D. Gainar, CEBS – Secretary RRA

The RomeRock Association Board of Directors met on February 5, 2015 with all Directors present. Clerk Pat Sowry was absent. Eight residents were also in attendance.

Dell Rogers thanked Mayor John Ball for keeping the lake drain open as much as possible so far during the winter which we believe saved more than a few docks from ice damage last month. Also thanks to Maintenance Director Dan Mullins and his crew for their extraordinary efforts keeping our roads clear of snow despite a series of mechanical breakdowns. Rogers reminded residents that it is their responsibility to clear snow from their mailboxes and any nearby fire hydrants.

Tom Sopko commented on our efforts to collect bad debt including his plans to have Kaman & Cusimano LLC, a law firm specializing in collections, make a presentation to the Board. Dell Rogers asked residents who might know persons interested in the upcoming Sheriff’s Sale of foreclosed properties in Roaming Shores to consider unpaid taxes, dues, utilities and other fees due in addition to the purchase price. Many times Sheriff Sale properties fall right back into foreclosure when these additional fees that exceed the purchase price are discovered.

Maintenance Director Dan Mullins reported on work fabricating wings for the new bulldozer, repair of Clubhouse kitchen, repair of Clubhouse gas leak, brake replacement, and truck pump replacement. The snow has been very heavy and took its toll on one truck that had a transmission failure and is being repaired with a heavy-duty transmission. Mullins asks that residents watch for plow trucks at intersections and keep garbage cans off the roadway. He also asked that residents remind their snow removal contractors not to push snow across the road that leaves dangerous ruts in the road.

Budget & Finance Committee Member John Martin obtained a preliminary bid from an accounting firm for our planned audit, last done 6-7 years ago. Costs are expected in the $3-4K range. Safety Committee Member Ron Morris warned that snowmobiles might again become interested in illegally driving on our ice-covered lake. He warns of many soft spots and springs that make the ice dangerous. Lake Management Sub-Committee Chairman Tim Langer reported on the Committee’s regular “Be Lake Responsible” articles appearing in the Shores News and e-blasts, work on a spring brochure, and planned promotional items containing the “Love the Lake” logo for exceptional work by residents interested in improving our lake’s water quality. Village Liaison Bob Cook, Council President, reported that the lake drain will be opened again soon due to expected ice melt at week’s end. Also the dam gate has been installed. Building & Facilities Committee Chairman Jim Swartz would like John Martin to join his committee. We will need an architect to design plan in order to proceed with his committee’s investigation of a permanent RRA Office.

In the Club Reports section of the meeting, Ron Morris reminded of the Friends & Neighbors winter dinner at Pasta Oven (BYOB) on February 13 at 6:00pm.

There were no Member Comments and the meeting was adjourned at 8:20pm. The Association Board’s next meeting will be on March 5. Hope to see you there!

With Sympathy: Kate Harris

kate-harrisKate Harris and her late husband, Rupe Harris were former Association Members who were very involved in local activities in their time here at the Shores. Their daughter Janet and her husband John were also property owners.

Katherine “Kate” Harris, 93, of Warren, Ohio, passed away suddenly while vacationing in Las Vegas, Nev. Kate was born Feb. 2, 1922, in New Castle to Kate and James Buchanan. She delighted telling people her birthday was 2222. Katherine married the love of her life, Rupert “Rupe” Harris, in 1941, and moved to San Fransisco and New London, Conn., trying to be close to Rupe whenever he had shore duty during his World War II submarine service in the Pacific Theater. She worked at the Shenago Pottery and then was secretary to the director of nursing at Jameson Hospital. She was a resident of Princeton and Weigletown before moving to Warren. Katherine was an avid sports enthusiast and lifelong boater. She belonged to the Ashtabula (Ohio) Yacht Club and the Coast Guard Auxillary. She and Rupe rescued many a boaters in distress in their popular boat, “Katherine L.” For many years, they cruised the Great Lakes, Erie Canal and Canada in the “Katherine L.” providing their grandchildren with many adventures at sea. In later years, they moved to Roaming Shores, Ohio, and continued to enjoy Lake Roaming Rock in their pontoon boat. Katherine moved to Shepard of the Valley in Poland, Ohio, in 2011, and continued to vacation in Indiana, Las Vegas and Geneva on the Lake. Up to virtually the day she passed away, Kate was seeing Las Vegas shows, playing bingo, going to auctions and living life to the fullest. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rupert Harris; her son-in-law, James Henry; and her daughter-in-law, Peggy Harris. She is survived by her daughters, Judy Henry and Janet Shaffer of Solsberry, Ind. and Las Vegas; her son, Rupert Harris of Niles, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A private service for the family will be held July 4, 2015, at the Ashtabula Yacht Club. Arrangements were entrusted to the Affordable Crematorium and Burial, 2457 N. Decatur Blvd., Las Vegas, Nev.

In the News…

love-the-lake-logo

by David Ernes – Lake Management Committee

Late last year, in response to the Toledo algal bloom that affected their drinking water, the Ohio House passed legislation known as HB 490. This bill included, among other sections, efforts intended to reduce the nutrients entering the watershed and ultimately Lake Erie by a reducing or eliminating the practice of manure application onto frozen or rain saturated ground. Unfortunately, the bill failed to pass the Senate. The failure was a result of the other provisions of the bill which were added that had nothing to do with Lake Erie water quality. Due to the rules of congress, this legislation was purged, and will have to be redrafted with the new state legislature in place this year (2015).

One of the important aspects of this legislation was that, although originally rejected by the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF), sections of it, including the manure provision, had gained support. This indicates a willingness on the part of the farmers to work with the state to solve this issue. This, in the author’s opinion, is a very good sign for compromise. However, one aspect of the bill that will be of concern for RRA members is that the original bill focused only on the Western Lake Erie Basin. It is therefore important to try to have the legislature consider the entire Lake Erie Basin within the state of Ohio. The Grand River into which Rock Creek flows, eventually ends up in Lake Erie. So it is in our benefit to make them aware of this. The LMC is beginning to look into this and, if possible, we will provide our RRA members some guidance in how to get our opinions heard as the new congress takes up this important subject. If we make our voices heard, we may be able to have an impact in the early stages of the new legislation. Stay tuned for a future article and spot it by our “Love the Lake” logo.

If you want to see more of what the OFBF had to say, you can check out their web site at www.ofbf.org.
