In Memoriam: Joanne Samson

Joanne (Smith) Samson, age 81,a resident of Roaming Shores since 1992, passed away on Saturday October 1st, 2016.

She was the daughter of Robert B. and Lila Smith of Big Flats, NY. She was born February 4, 1935 in Rochester, NY. Joanne was married to Walter R. Samson (LTC US Air Force ret.) on September 17, 1955. They just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

Joanne enjoyed living throughout the US and in several countries including Belgium and Saudi Arabia. Her world travels included Africa, China, Italy, Spain, Singapore, Egypt and England. Her greatest joy was hosting family gatherings at the lake. Joanne was adored by her grandchildren who will miss her “red bird hugs.” She treasured the many friends she made at the lake during her 20 year retirement.

Joanne is survived by her husband Walt, four children; Bryan (Connie) Samson of St Louis, MO, Mark (Vera) Samson of Leavenworth, KS, Scott (Barb) Samson of Naperville, IL, and Susan Samson of Evanston, IL. and sisters Marian Kreilser and Doris Whitter of Bradenton, FLA, Six grandchildren, Marie (Mike), Chelsea, Robert, Abigail, Henry and Tenley, and one great grandson, Everett.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Edward Smith.

A Memorial Service officiated by Rev. James Stanley will be held at the Paine Funeral Home, Inc., 140 E. Main Street, Orwell, OH 44076 on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 11:00am. Calling hours will be held prior to services from 10:00 – 10:45am. A second service and interment of her ashes will take place in Horseheads, NY to be scheduled in November. Halloween in Roaming Shores 2016

halloweenHalloween in Roaming Shores will be on Saturday, October 29th. Trick or Treating will take place between 5pm – 7pm.

After trick-or-treating, come join us at the Clubhouse for a Halloween Happening! We will be playing a movie and will have treats and refreshments. The Roaming Shores Police Department will be grilling up hotdogs!
This is a free event for all of the little ghosts and goblins in the Shores (their family, too!)

If you would like to donate candy for treat bags, please drop it off at either the RRA or RSV offices. Thank you!

In Memoriam: Vaughn Hunter

Vaughn P. Hunter, age 72, died at his home on Thursday morning, September 22nd, with his wife by his side.

Vaughn was the son of Lester P. Hunter and Evelyne (Roth) Hunter, born January 18th, 1944 in Washington, D.C. Vaughn married Helen (Ange) Hunter on September 30th, 1972.

Vaughn was born in Washington, D.C., attended St. John’s High School, graduated from Coolidge High School, and played trumpet in the Washington Redskins’ Band in the early ’60’s. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from May 1963 to November 1968, where he was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. Vaughn then became a Police Officer for the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. where he worked from March of 1972 until retirement in September 1994. Vaughn retired from the Police Department as a Detective, but during his career he was involved in Vice, Swat, Repeat Offender Project, NSID, and more.

Vaughn loved being with his family, especially “his princess”, granddaughter Mackenzie. He enjoyed golfing, shooting, and fishing. Vaughn was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, The American Legion, Jefferson Conservation Club, and the NRA.

Vaughn is survived by his wife, Helen (Ange) Hunter, two sons, Vaughn and Daniel, and his granddaughter, Mackenzie.

Vaughn was preceded in death by his parents and son, Vaughn Paul Hunter, Jr.

A funeral mass officiated by Rev. G. David Weikart will be held at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 3043 State Rt. 45, Rock Creek, OH 44084 On Wednesday, October Oct. 5th at 1pm. Burial of his ashes will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery Aspen Hill, MD

Daughter of the late George and Ann (Neé: Zamba). Dear sister of Ann Marie Cinelli.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 24th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rock Creek, Ohio, located on Rt. 45 approx. 10 miles south of Interstate Rt. 90 East. Attendees are invited to attend a luncheon reception immediately following the service.

Beginning Monday, September 12, US 6 one mile east of SR 45 will be closed through Thursday, September 22 for a culvert replacement. The detour will be SR 45 to US 322 to SR 46.

State Route 45 in Austinburg Township
(Tuesday, September 6 – until further notice)
Beginning Tuesday, September 6, SR 45 between Mill Creek Rd. and Eagleville-Jefferson Rd. will be closed through late October for a bridge deck replacement. The detour will be US 6 to SR 534 to SR 307.

State Route 46 in Lenox Township
(Monday, September 12 – until further notice)
Beginning Monday, September 12, SR 46 between Sirrine Rd. and Tompkins Rd. will be closed through early October for a culvert replacement. The detour will be US 6 to SR 11 to SR 307.

With Sympathy: Jean Dolan

Mrs. Dolan was a resident of Roaming Shores whose family many of our long-time members may remember. Our thoughts go out to their family and friends.

Jean M. Dolan, age 85, former Rock Creek, Fairport Harbor and Chardon resident, died Thursday afternoon in Bluffton, S.C., at her son’s residence.

She was born July 12, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Earl L. and Martha C. (Dowling) Worthington. Jean graduated from Ursuline Sacred Heart High School in East Cleveland. She was married to William E. Dolan on Sept. 1, 1951, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Cleveland Heights.
Mr. and Mrs. Dolan moved to the Roaming Shores area in 1970, coming from Cleveland. They owned and operated the Convenience Store in Jefferson, retiring in 1986.
Mrs. Dolan was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Ft. Myers, Fla. She did volunteer work for the Interfaith Caregivers Program of the Alzheimer’s Association and enjoyed playing bingo while a member at Sacred Heart Church.

She is survived by four sons, William E. (Marie) Dolan Jr. of Willoughby, Robert L. (Kim) Dolan of Bluffton, S.C., Daniel J. (Sue) Dolan of Ashtabula and Terrance F. (Sandy Febel) Dolan of Jefferson; 10 grandchildren, William III, Cori and Andy Dolan, Danielle DiDonato, Mary Dolan Johnson, Abby and Alexa Dolan, Jason Schafer, Justin Cartor and Ashley Evans; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, John L. Worthington of Euclid.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill in 2013; a grandson, Gregory Daniel Dolan; and two sisters, Anne M. Molnar and Margaret M. Davey.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Saturday (9/3/16), at Sacred Heart Church, 3049 N. Main St., Rock Creek, with the Rev. Fr. John Madden presiding. Burial will be in Morgan Union Cemetery.

Calling Hours will be held Friday (9/2/16) from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Jefferson Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND CREMATORY, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson.

Solicitation in the Shores

There have been reports of Solicitors in Roaming Shores going door-to-door selling meat.

In accordance with Village Ordinance 362 -03 -02, all individuals wishing to canvass or solicit within the residential boundaries of the Village of Roaming Shores must registered with the Clerk – Treasurer , provide the clerk with a copy of a valid driver’s license and pay a $15 required fee.

It is encouraged to not open your door for anyone you do not know. Solicitors should have a permit from the Village of Roaming Shores.
