Association Board Approves Placement of Fish Structures

The RomeRock Association Board has approved a Fishing Club proposal to add fish structures to Lake Roaming Rock.  These structures will improve the fishery, as suggested in a recent study by Jones Fish, by providing three-dimensional habitat for fish to hide safely from predators.  Fish structures also provide surface areas for algae to grow, in turn feeding zooplankton (the favored food of smaller fish), and so on up the food chain.

The fish structures will be built using a 72” long PVC fence post placed vertically into a 5-gallon bucket filled with 40 pounds of concrete for ballast.  Twelve pieces of 30” long PVC balusters will be connected to each post to create the branches of the structure.

In 2026, twenty structures will be placed into the lake at no cost to the Association membership. The locations for the fish structures were selected with the help of the Lake Management Committee, Randy Ruebel, and several members of the Fishing Club.  Groups of four fish structures will be placed strategically in five different locations.  They will be placed at the entrances of Plum Creek Cove, Terrace Cove, Browning Cove, Beachview Cove, and Sugar Creek Cove.

The structures will be placed in no wake zones at a depth of 12’ or deeper to prevent any danger to swimmers and boaters. Deep water locations were also chosen to prevent any movement due to the excessive current created by wake boats.  A detailed lake map showing the location of the structures, including their GPS coordinates, will be made available to all members of the Association.  In 2027, the Fishing Club plans to install thirty additional fish structures. Good luck to all our members who enjoy fishing and we will see you on the water.
