With Sympathy: Rudy Fernandez

ROME — Rudy J. Fernandez, age 88, of Rome, Ohio, passed away at his home on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, surrounded by his family.

Rudy was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, the son of Joseph and Anna Fernandez. He was married to his wife of 68 years, Evelyn Wilber, on May 28, 1946. Rudy was a Veteran of World War II, having entered the Merchant Marines as a Jr. Engineer at the age of 17 in 1944.

Rudy enjoyed farming, fishing and making people laugh. He had a passion for flying which spanned over 40 years. He owned two airplanes and was an instrument-rated pilot. Rudy was a member of the VFW, worked for Buckeye Masonry for 12 years as a carpenter, and was a member of the Carpenters Union #404. Rudy loved his family, was kind, had a generous heart, and built homes for his family.

Rudy is survived by his wife, Evelyn; two children, Gary (Christa) Fer nandez of Rome, Ohio and Cheryl (John Hanyok) Fernandez of Roaming Shores, Ohio, five grandchildren, Chad Fernandez, Marci Szabo, Shelly Reith, Michael Hutzell, and Chelsea Fernandez; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harry (Ruth) Fernandez.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a great-grandchild, Tyler Joseph Pierce.

A Memorial Service officiated by Pastor Johnathon Schroedor will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 24th, at Rock Creek Union Cemetery Chapel (St. Rt. 45 south of town), with U.S. Military Honors. Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until time of Service, at the Chapel.
