Spring Thoughts for Safe Boating this Season

Boating Safety Committee
By: Bruce C. Bower

Please read and understand the 2013 lake rules and regulations. If any questions, call me or come to a RRA meeting for clarification.

A couple of things come to mind to remind you of before the boating season goes into full swing. Check all your safety equipment! Remember that fire extinguishers do not last forever, it’s not worth 12 dollars to take the chance on an uncontrolled fire, buy a new one. After having participated in a couple of courtesy boat exams, the shortcomings usually are: malfunctioning lights, an insufficient number of PFD’s, an inadequate anchor and anchor line and the lack of a properly marked orange distress flag. Carry extra lines in case a towing situation arises.

For inboards, check your engine flame arrestor and engine blower ventilation system. Another suggestion would be to carry something, such as a bucket, to use as a bailing devise. It’s not required but sure would come in handy if needed.

Read the Ohio Boat Operator’s Guide or go to http://watercraft.ohiodnr.gov/ for more details on requirements and suggestions.
