Fall OLCA Meeting at Candlewood Lake

Posted on: September 30th, 2011

This week, 7 from Roaming Shores attended the 2011 Fall OLCA Meeting at Candlewood Lake in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. Those who attended were Gary Phillips, Pat Sowry, Jen Addair, Dave Schuster, Rick & Janice Rumbaugh, and Al Ludke.

There, the attendees had the opportunity to meet with representatives of other lake communities in Ohio and learn more about their communities.

Topics of discussion at this Fall's meeting included discussing security in the community and on the lake, revenue sources and savings, and working with outside agencies to gain cooperation from upstream neighbors.

It was a great learning experience for all who attended. Candlewood Lake was a very good host and they have a very beautiful lake. Below are pictures taken at the meeting. Unfortunately, the Lake Tour had to be canceled due to the weather.

Smoke Testing of Waste Water Collection System

Updated on: September 24, 2011

From the Village of Roaming Shores:

Attention: Smoke Testing Underway

The Village will be smoke testing its waste water collection system throughout September and October in order to identify breaks, which can be the source of inflow and infiltration.

The purpose of this exercise is to identify locations where small and big cracks, complete collapses or, possibly, illegal connections may exist in the sanitary sewer collection system.

Block by block, street by street, in roughly 200 yard sections the sewer lines in different neighborhoods will be temporarily plugged and then filled with harmless smoke, which will hopefully rise through the ground and identify the location of a breach for point repairs.

While rare, some homes may experience smoke exiting from sink and bath drains. Do not be alarmed. The smoke, again, is harmless and will dissipate quickly.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Vic Virmala, utility department superintendent, at 474-2302 or Kevin Grippi, administrator, at 563-5083.

Andrew Joseph Macek

Posted on: August 3, 2011

Andy Macek

On June 29, 2011, Andy passed peacefully holding the hand of his lifelong love and wife of 55 years, Jo Ann. Andy fought a courageous 6 year battle with lung cancer. Born on September 2, 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the only child of Josephine Macek Klavora Allen, now 98, residing in Palm Desert, Calif. He and Jo Ann were high school sweethearts and married on October 29, 1955. He attended Collinwood High School and John Carroll University. Andy worked at Acme Cleveland/Cleveland Twist Drill Corp for almost 25 years and in 1979 was transferred to California as Director of Operations for Nobur Manufacturing. He went on to open Simi Tools and Repairs in Simi Valley, Calif., which he owned ten years. Along with his career, Andy believed in giving back and served as a Cubmaster, Scoutmaster and Little League coach. He also was Chairman of the Automotive Division of the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, Business Person of the Year in 1990, Chairman of Simi Valley Days and President of the Simi Valley Historical Society in 1995-1996. He retired and the Maceks moved to Palm Desert in 1999. He became involved with the 222 Club also the Joslyn Senior Center, serving many years on the board and eventually President. He had a passion for classic cars and enjoyed car club events, especially the Classic Thunderbird Club of Palm Springs, along with golf and boating. He was also a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and belonged to Sacred Heart Parish. Through his long battle with cancer, Andy never lost his sense of humor or zest for life and his smile always revealed those big dimples.

Andy and Jo Ann first moved to Roaming Shores in 2002 buying a house on Western Star Court. Three years later they moved to Lake View Drive where they enjoyed visiting their family each summer and cruising up and down the lake on Andy’s new pontoon boat. They also took 1st place in the First July 4th house decorating contest.

Andy joined the Roaming Shores Lake Patrol Committee a few years ago and became instrumental to the development of the boat ramp gate by the marina. Unfortunately, due to his illness, Andy could not travel back to Roaming Shores for the last two summers.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; his son, Andrew; and his daughter, Valerie Eybsen; grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Frank, Joyce, Olivia; and great grandchildren, Christopher and Jenna. The dedication of Dr. Davood Vafai and his staff will never be forgotten. We are also grateful for the comforting care provided by the staff of Odyssey Hospice and care givers at Desert Valley Premiere Eldercare. Immediate arrangements were private per his wishes and the celebration he wanted will be held in the fall. Donations in his memory may be sent to the Humane Society of the Desert, 17825 N. Indian Ave., N. Palm Springs, CA. 92211, or to Joslyn Senior Center.

High Water - No Wake Lights

Posted on: April 25th, 2011

With all of the rain we have been having recently, you may have noticed the flashing lights on top of the Beach 2 Pool Building, another on top of the Clubhouse, and a third at the Boat Ramp.

These are High Water - No Wake Signal Lights. They were installed on Lake Roaming Rock last year. These lights will be lit when the lake level reaches 16 inches above normal lake levels. When lit, the entire lake is to be NO WAKE. High water levels and irresponsible watercraft operators equals erosion damage and items swept off members docks & seawalls.

Thank you for your understanding and adhering to the new High Water Signal Lights.

Victory Gardens

Posted on: April 22, 2011

Some have questioned the Association’s need to expand out of our nearly 45 year old pole barn. Though repainted and reroofed in the past several years, we thought we would give members a look inside. Remember, six vehicles, a backhoe and much equipment has ALREADY been removed to the new building. The 2010 RRA Board of Directors voted to build the new building, planned for about 12 years, using existing funds, requiring NO NEW BORROWING!

Boil Advisory Lifted

Posted on: December 14, 2010

Press release from Ohio American Water

ASHTABULA, OHIO (December 12, 2011) – As of 7:15 P.M. December 12, Ohio American Water’s (OAW) Ashtabula District has lifted the precautionary boil water advisory for OAW customers in the City of Ashtabula and North Kingsville and Ashtabula, Kingsville and Plymouth Townships. The advisory is also lifted for districts serviced by OAW including Aqua Ohio which serves customers in the Villages of Jefferson and Roaming Shores and the Ashtabula County Water System as well as Geneva, Geneva on the lake and the Village Rock Creek.

Customers can call our Customer Service Center at 1-800-673-5999 if they have any questions.

The precautionary boil advisory was issued because of elevated turbidity levels (cloudiness) and bacteria that could be present. Crews have resolved the issues and multiple samples over the past several hours have been within acceptable parameters.

When turbidity levels reach certain levels, the Ohio EPA requires a water utility to issue a precautionary boil advisory. Turbidity has no health effects. However, turbidity can interfere with disinfection and provide a medium for microbial growth. Turbidity may indicate the presence of disease causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea and associated headaches.

Lake Management News

Posted on: October 15, 2010

The Lake Management Committee would like all association members to know that a record of its activity can be viewed online on the RRA Website. Just go up to the website and click on the tab labeled Lake Management. The RRA Board of Directors has engaged Enviroscience as a consulting group to study the lake and make recommendations to the LMC and Board as to the most effective ways to work on the lake to ensure its continued good health. This past summer, Enviroscience completed a comprehensive general study of the lake as well as scientific studies related to water quality, weed growth, and siltation. The results of all these studies are published on the website, as well as in hard-copy form at the RRA office for use by those who might not have access to a computer. All are encouraged to make use of these materials to educate themselves of the work of the Lake Management Committee, and its recommendations to the Board regarding the health of the waters of Lake Roaming Rock. It is hoped that the presentation of this material will be the start of an ongoing and comprehensive repository of LMC information for members now and in the future. We on the present LMC see this as an important first step to attempt to ensure a continuing good-faith scientific-based program for managing the lake in the future. Thanks – The LMC
